Rural Tuscany is obviously dragon country. Less obvious are the dragons in the grand old cities. But they are there, if you know how to look for them.
Stair-dragons are a good kind of dragon to have in a city filled with campaniles and bell towers: they spend most of their time sleeping, curled around the highest tower with the best view. Most sought-after is the perch on the Palazzo Vecchio, with its superb view of the Santa Maria del Fiore and its grand Duomo (pictured here). The bell ringers are quite glad to have them, for they are more reliable that conventional stairs, and will even catch you if you fall—something plain stone steps never did for anyone.
