Description

The October illustration for my 2006 Calendar Antellonian Horse which you can purchase via check or PayPal at Eltsar Press.

Well here it is, I think that this one is my personal favorite out of the entire calendar. This is not to say I think it is it BEST (I don't judge myself like that), but it means the most to me on a personal, and spiritual level.

Official Calendar Comment:
Night Horses are probably the most mysterious of all the fantastical equines. They live in the same netherwhere as fairies, demons, a dreams. Their presence can be detected by their strong tangy scent, an upsurge in the ambient magics, and their ability to run on thin air as if it were solid ground. They can look like any kind of horse, and indeed some of them may have once been ordinary horses. Night Horses are invisible to humans except under the light of a full moon. However, they do love to get out and about all through the month and being sociable creatures are always drawn to wherever their domesticated counterparts are kept. This could explain those many occasions when a horse has spooked for no apparent reason.
----

Okay lemme explain that last bit. Firstly, Night Horses are something that have been in my head for years, they seem to embody everything that is wild and magical about horses. They only come out at night at the times when the moon is brightest, and run. Just, run. Because that's what horses do best. So here we have a group of Night Horses, just running, having fun.

This piece also has some sentimental attachment to me, because I have put two of my own dearest horses in the picture. The gray one in front is actually a rendition of my stuffed horse plushie, White Star, who has been warding off nightmares for me since I was... 3 I think. *hugs White Star* The other one is the light chestnut with the blaze. This is in memory of Ranger, the horse who taught me just about all the basics of horsemanship, not to mention how to jump. (Passed away in 2001 at the age of 32.)

So here's to all the beloved horses who are no longer with us. May we see you again sometime, in the distance, running fast, on a moonlit night.

Night scene. Oh yes, NIGHT SCENE! I loved doing this, with the hills and the clouds. Trying to capture that moonlit feel, where everything seems suddenly much more magical. The hills were particularly pleasing, because they are very much like the hills around my house, so when I look at this, I can see something both fantastical and familar at the same time.

Wow, this is awesome! I love the coolness that the colors give, it makes it seem a lot more real.
