Gaiman's Bridge

Description

I'm writing this on the fine edge of that blade that's conciousness on one side and dream of the other, that thin silver horizon where you hover right before falling asleep, and right before completely waking. Neil Gaiman lives here all the damn time. He scribbles his stories and sends them out from the thin silver horizon whose bridge the rest of us traverse just twice a day. Gaiman is the troll who lives beneath the bridge; he exhales into word balloons the visions that flash fleetingly across our gaze and then are gone with the next memory. Dreams of what we've loved and lost, dreams that are more vivid than our lives, dreams that tell you they aren't dreams, from which come the questions that trouble and enthrall and finally free our spirits, if we're brave enough for the answers. Gaiman's ideas, in other words, of a good time.

—Steve Erickson on Neil Gaiman, from his introduction to The Sandman Volume Three: Dream Country.

I think that above quote is all you need to know about this painting. I read it, and this image floated into my head and stayed there. So even though I could have done fanart of Coraline or perhaps a scene from Monarch of the Glen, I'v wound up with fanart about Neil Gaiman rather than about his writing. Even though Neil has come out as a satyr rather than a troll… I think it doesn't bear harping on.

Watercolors on 9"x12" hot press watercolor paper with acrylic ink. Art © myself, some rights reserved. This picture is part of my never-ending Fanart series covering all the items listed under "Fan Of" in my old deviantID. Neil Gaiman has pushed his way in a upset Joss Whedon, on the grounds that I like the way NG kills off his sympathetic characters better. :(

This is unbelievably cool. Neil Gaiman is such a fantastic writer, and this work truly does justice to both his amazing imagination and your obvious skill...looking forward to viewing all the rest, now! :D
